Dulwich Picture Gallery

Dulwich Picture Gallery is the oldest purpose-built art gallery in England: it was founded in 1811 when Sir Francis Bourgeois bequeathed his collection of old master paintings ‘for the inspection of the public’. The Gallery was designed by the architect, Sir John Soane and was created to display the paintings in the best possible manner. Soane’s design made use of overhead skylights to flood the gallery with natural light and a series of interconnecting rooms to give the impression of endless space. Dulwich Picture Gallery is situated in the leafy Dulwich Village and is an easy 15 minute journey from central London by train.
