Tunnel Shaft
The Tunnel Shaft is a Grade II* listed Victorian stone chamber, 15 metres deep, with tall curved walls and a cylindrical volume that creates intimate sightlines and natural acoustic warmth. Built in 1843, it retains its raw character as the original entrance to the Thames Tunnel. Theatrical-style lighting accentuates the textured masonry. The space is equipped with a built-in PA system, speakers and Wi-Fi. Originally known as the Grand Entrance Hall, it hosted concerts, banquets and fairs in the 19th century. Today it suits creative and community groups seeking an atmospheric, performance-focused setting for standing receptions, seated talks, performances and private events. The museum staff are informative and helpful during hire.
